CARRBORO, NC - June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month in the Town of Carrboro, as proclaimed by Mayor Barbara Foushee. Happy Pride!
The Town of Carrboro has a proud history of advancing the rights of LGBTQ+ people, including: adding sexual orientation to the list of protected categories in the Town’s equal employment opportunity policy in 1990; being the first municipality in the state to create a domestic partner registry in 1994; being among the first to support civil marriage for same-sex couples and inclusion of LGBTQ+ families in comprehensive immigration reform; being the first to call for repeal of the discriminatory House Bill 2 in 2016; being among the first (with the Towns of Hillsborough and Chapel Hill and Orange County) to adopt a local ordinance prohibiting discrimination in public accommodations and employment in 2021.
All residents of Carrboro are encouraged to celebrate and affirm their LGBTQ+ family members, friends, and neighbors, to take action to defend their human rights, and to participate in Small Town Pride events in Carrboro and Chapel Hill throughout the month, including:
Chapel Hill Pride Promenade | Saturday, June 7 from 12 -3 p.m. (downtown Chapel Hill) Walk with Pride! This promenade starts at 12 p.m. at Peace & Justice Plaza, 179 E. Franklin St.
Carrboro's Pride Piper Walk | Saturday, June 14 at 4:30 p.m. (El Centro Hispano, 201 W Weaver St, Carrboro, NC 27510 -- Join local officials to help roll Rainbow Ram down Weaver Street from El Centro Hispano to Town Commons for the Carrboro Orgullo Pride Celebration.
Carrboro Orgullo Pride Celebration | Saturday, June 14 from 5-8 p.m. (Carrboro Town Commons, 301 W. Main St., Carrboro, NC 27510 -- There will be local food trucks, drag shows, music, and crafts for the kids. This is a space to celebrate and share the diverse cultures, identities, and experiences of the local Latinx LGBTQ community. Organizers from El Centro Hispano are collaborating with the Town of Carrboro to bring an event that fosters unity, inclusivity, and empowerment by showcasing our community’s talents while providing social, healthcare, and advocacy resources, and family fun.
