Counties Release FY21 Transit Work Plans for Public Comment

FY21 Draft Transit Plan

Orange and Durham Counties have released their draft FY 21 Transit Work Plans and are collecting comments from the public until May 22. Send all comments to Aaron Cain at aaron.cain@durhamnc.gov.

Highlights of the proposed Durham County work plan include the purchase of electric buses, contruction of 40 bus stop improvement projects, and development of transit emphasis corridors on Holloway Street, Fayetteville Street, and Chapel Hill Road.

Transit emphasis corridors will have frequest bus service and amenities such as bus shelters, benches, and boarding areas large enough for wheelchairs and strollers. Other improvements, such as new sidewalks, crosswalks, and signage, will provide safe access to bus stops on these corridors.

Highlights of the proposed Orange County work plan include high-frequency service on 11 bus routes, new weekend service on seven routes, exanded service on the Hillsborough Circulator, and continued funding for the North-South Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.

The North-South BRT project will create an 8.2-mile transit, bicycle, and pedestrian route along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, South Columbia Street, and US 15-501 South. BRT combines high-capacity buses with exclusive traffic lanes and traffic signal priority to decrease travel times, increase reliability, and improve the rider experience.

Projects in the annual transit work plans are funded from the Triangle Tax District consistent with the Durham County Transit Plan and Orange County Transit Plan, which were both adopted in 2017. Tax district funds are generated from a 1/2 cent sales tax, vehicle registration fees, and a vehicle rental tax in both counties.

Adjustments will be made to the proposed work plans based on public feedback. The plans will be submitted to governing bodies for approval by July 1.

All comments can be submitted to Aaron Cain at aaron.cain@durhamnc.gov.
