Carrboro Town Council Approves The ArtsCenter Development

The Town Council has approved a conditional use permit application for The ArtsCenter’s new two-story building plan at 315 Jones Ferry Road.

The $5.5 million building will replace the nonprofit arts agency’s longtime home at 300 E. Main St. Its future home will be located across from OWASA near the intersection of Jones Ferry Road and Barnes Street.

In response to input from the community and advisory boards, the Council approved the development on a 1.36-acre site with conditions, including that the developer provide a detailed a stormwater system maintenance plan. The project will include permeable pavers that let water through to the soil, as well as an underground stormwater storage and sand filter systems. Plans call for 41 vehicle and 16 bicycle parking spaces.

The Council also required the developer to commit to increased neighborhood engagement to ensure that concerns of the local community are heard.

Joint Cleanup 1

Joint Creek Cleanup Underway

The towns of Carrboro and Chapel Hill are inviting residents and businesses to help clean our urban streams this March.

Due to the public health safety concerns, we are not leading organized groups for the cleanup effort this year. Families and pods are encouraged to participate in smaller litter cleanup groups.

Joining the challenge is easy, just follow these steps:

Last year, participants picked up 5,280 pounds of trash! Help us beat that number this year.

Participants can enter to win prizes by completing the Litter Cleanup Data Sheet https://arcg.is/1irWqe on Survey123. The data sheet will be open to the public from March 13 to April 17. Prizes include reusable straws, cloth grocery bags, water bottles, and more!

Litter in a stream does not always start at the streambank, but it will end up there. If it is on the ground, chances are that it will end up in our local streams and creeks. By cleaning up trash around your neighborhood or business, you are helping protect our local waterways from pollution.

All trash should be bagged and put into your trash can. If you have more trash than will fit in your trash can, take it to one of the Waste and Recycling Centers http://orangecountync.gov/1149/Waste-Recycling-Centers:

  • 1514 Eubanks Rd in Chapel Hill or
  •  1616 Ferguson Rd in Chapel Hill

Mark your calendars - the Carrboro Farmers' Market hours are changing! The Wednesday afternoon market started back up on Wednesday, March 17, and the Saturday morning market will expand to main season hours, 7 a.m. to noon, starting Saturday, March 20.

The Wednesday market runs from 3 to 6 p.m. every Wednesday afternoon until Thanksgiving. This market is a great low-traffic option with lots of variety, ample parking, and all your favorite vendors! It's a convenient stop on your way home from work or school. The Market offers take-home kids activities through Market Bunch kids club every month: thanks to a grant from Carolina Farm Credit; and it also offers $5 coupons to all kids who participate to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables at the Market.
