Structure Fire – 500-L Smith Level Rd, Carrboro NC

CARRBORO, North Carolina – On January 8, 2018, at 5:08 PM, Carrboro Fire-Rescue was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 500 Smith Level Rd. Upon arrival crews found heavy fire conditions. 16 units total were impacted with fire, smoke, and water damage; five units beyond the fire wall were not impacted. It took crews approximately 45 minutes for the fire to be under control.

Carrboro Fire-Rescue received assistance from Chapel Hill Fire, White Cross Fire, North Chatham Fire, South Orange Rescue, Carrboro Police, Chapel Hill Transit, Orange County Animal Control, Orange County Emergency Services, Orange County EMS, and Orange County Fire Marshal’s Office.

Orange County Fire Marshal’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigations conducted the fire investigation. The fire has been ruled accidental with point of origin being an exhaust fan. The building has been condemned and a total of 21 units are affected. Total dollar loss has been estimated at $500,000.

This building did not have residential fire sprinklers.

Carrboro Fire-Rescue wants all citizens to remember to check your smoke alarms, have a home escape plan, and designate a meeting place to account for all family members.
