For Homeowners with Heating Oil Underground Storage Tanks
Do you live in an older home or neighborhood where heating oil may have been used as the energy for home furnaces? Have you noticed a strong oil smell after a recent storm, seen disconnected pipes coming out of a crawl space or basement, noticed an oil sheen on the grass or roadway? Signs like these might indicate that an underground heating oil storage tank may be leaking? If you see or suspect a leak please contact the Fire and Rescue department immediately by dialing 911.
The Town of Carrboro has multiple neighborhoods that contain or may contain underground heating oil storage tanks. We are currently gathering information to contact possible properties that may be at risk and will be following up once we have further details. Check our Stormwater outreach page
for additional and upcoming information.
If you know you have this type of tank and wish to have it removed or properly abandoned, you can contact the NC Department of Environmental Quality regional representative
for additional information on how to best proceed.
