Mayor Lydia Lavelle Signs Amicus Brief Supporting Nondiscrimination and LBGTQ Rights
Carrboro Mayor Lydia Lavelle joined more than 150+ mayors and jurisdictions to file a friend-of-the-court brief to the United States Supreme Court supporting the principle of nondiscrimination in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The caseconcerns a Denver baker who refused to sell a wedding cake to a same-sex couple, attempting to create a constitutional right to discriminate based on religious grounds.
The mayors and municipal leaders represented in the brief know how vital this case is. This brief makes a forceful argument for what’s at stake with this case – for LGBTQ people and everybody else.
“The Town of Carrboro has a history of supporting the LGBT community. By signing on to this brief, we are standing by basic principles of equality - that everyone, no matter their sexual orientation or identity, should be able to receive the same services in public places,” says Mayor Lydia Lavelle.
