    If you've ever wanted to learn ballroom dancing, here's your opportunity. This 6 week ballroom 'sampler' class will introduce the basics of three American style ballroom favorites including waltz, foxtrot, and east coast swing. The class will focus on lead/follow techniques, basic patterns and footwork, rhythm, and ease on the dance floor. No partner is required. Please wear comfortable footwear that stays on your feet such as dress shoes or character shoes. Athletic shoes, flip-flops, and sandals are not appropriate.

    This traditional craft class is known for its good company as well as the fine baskets it produces. A new studio format now accommodates the lives of busy basket makers. Studio Fee: Pay $66.00 for any 5 classes. Register before the 1st class of the studio series. No need to designate which studio classes you will attend.     CAROLEENA'S TUSCAN KITCHEN

    Authentic Tuscan cuisine prepared, cooked, served and eaten by you! Caroleena, who learned regional cooking from the masters, cracks the mysterious code of Tuscan cooking and translates her very special language into easy, delicious and healthy meals that you will "carry-out" with you for a lifetime. Beginning with written step-by-step recipes, each class culminates in a shared, family-style dinner. All dinners include a quick "antipasto" (appetizer), "primo piatto" (starch, first course), "secondo piatto" (a protein), "contorno" (side dish), "pane" (bread), "formaggio" (cheese) and a seasonal fruit.     Small is Possible: Life in a Local Economy

    The Community Book Forum series brings our community together to discuss important issues and ideas. We encourage the community to read a book and consider its relevance to and implications for our community and our society at large. We want to hear your thoughts and ideas at our forum event where discussion of the book will be led by expert panelists.

    This summer, we will discuss what it takes to live life in a local economy. Lyle Estill, co-founder of Piedmont Biofuels, will discuss the local economy in Chatham County that has allowed their citizens to feed themselves, fuel themselves, heal themselves, and govern themselves. This discussion will be valuable to anyone interested in sustainability, co-ops, biodiesel, whole foods, slow food, small business, and more.

    ETHNIC VEGITARIAN COOKING
    Cosponsored by the ArtsCenter

    Whether for health, environmental or ethical reasons, or to expand their repertoire, many people are increasingly interested in learning to cook vegetarian dishes. This class will introduce students to basics about vegetarianism, including vegetarian nutrition, and serve as a hands-on introduction to cooking a variety of ethnic vegetarian dinners. We will cover cuisine of countries like India, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Thailand, Indonesia, and America. In each class, students will work in teams of four to make several side dishes, one or two main dishes, and a dessert.     GOLDEN TRAILS SERIES
    This adult oriented walking group gets you out and about on local trails. The company of others, the gains from a little physical endeavor and the joys of being in a natural environment are possible rewards. A small fee helps cover accompanying staff costs. Transportation from a central point is offered . Binoculars are always encouraged. Water is always a must bring! As with any exercise, your physician's recommendation for your participation is encouraged. Please feel free to call Dana Hughes at 918-7372 to find out more specific trail difficulty information so that you can make a good choice. Pre-Registration required for all trips.
    JOHNSTON MILL NATURE PRESERVE & ALLEN & SON BBQ
    Johnston Mill Nature Preserve consists of 295 acres. It is one of Triangle Land Conservancy's (TLC) public access properties and is considered one of Orange County's most important natural areas and was included in the Inventory of Natural Areas and Wildlife Habitats of Orange County. New Hope Creek cuts through the Northwest corner of the site and is joined by Old Field Creek, which flows out of Duke Forest. There is a well marked 1.5 mile Robin's Trail with bridges over Old Field Creek and intermittent streams. We will look for many nesting neotropical migrants such as Hooded Warbler, Scarlet Tanager and Indigo Bunting. In addition to this great hike we will be stopping at Allen and Son's BBQ for lunch on the way back to Carrboro (please bring money for lunch).

    ADAMS TRACT AND MAPLE VIEW ICE CREAM
    In 1950, Dr. J. Edison Adams, beloved UNC professor of botany, purchased and improved an old homestead as a residence for his family. This is the 27 acre Adam's tract along Bolin Creek which connects with Carrboro's Wilson Park. Trails through the northern portion reveal a contrasting older deciduous forest of oaks, hickories and beech on steep slopes leading down to Bolin Creek. After discovering the rocky ridges of Bolin Creek, we will visit Maple View for a summer ice cream tradition. (please bring money for ice cream)

    INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

    In this class, participants will learn about general photographic technique such as framing, composition, and lighting, as well as general photographic terms that you should be aware. We will learn about focus, depth of field, lens speed, aperture, shutter speed, effective ISO/ASA, white balance, and continuous high-speed shooting. In between classes, you will have shooting assignments, and we will review what you did in class. We will also delve into features specific to digital photography, such as suggested best practices for storing and archiving digital images, shooting in RAW vs. other formats, panoramic shots, and sound and video capture. This three-hour workshop is meant for people who may have some, little, or no photography background, but who want to learn what digital photography is about. Do I need a computer?-realistically, yes. Do I have to be a computer expert?-No. Can I send pictures on the internet?-Yes. What features should I look for in a digital camera?     MEDITERRANEAN COOKING

    Take a culinary journey with me and find ways to the Mediterranean cuisine that is healthy and delicious. In this class you will find lots of ideas for eating wonderful foods that later you can create in you own kitchen. The Mediterranean recipes from this class are based on authentic cooking traditions still followed by the natives. We will cook easy, quick and healthy Mediterranean food and leftovers will be yours to take home! Everything, including native drinks such as tea and coffee, will be supplied by the teacher. Students will be sure to feel like taking a trip to a Mediterranean location during the classes! Come and join us for this fun cooking class!     TENNIS

    Beginner and Intermediate tennis lessons are offered throughout the year. These lessons will teach participants the fundamentals of tennis including proper grips, ground strokes, serves and volleys. Classes will be on the courts at Wilson Park. Please pre-register with the Recreation and Parks Department.

    ADULT BEGINNER

    Learn fundamentally sound tennis based on the methods used by the most advanced players and teachers. Easy to learn progressions bring fast results with regular practice. You will learn an all court game with emphasis on movement, rhythm and being in the moment. Although designed for beginners, you can also benefit if you've had some previous experience. There will be time for individual attention. You can practice with other students after/between classes. Bring a racquet.

    ADULT INTERMEDIATE

    For tennis players who have developed all the basic tennis skills after sufficient practice. At the least, you are fairly consistent playing at a medium pace, and you can play with some placement and variety. With stroke and fitness drills and individual instruction, you will learn to use spin, ball control, and team work in doubles. Error detection and correction will help smooth out the rough edges. Self-awareness, understanding professional strokes, and developing your own style will be emphasized. More advanced players are welcome as well. Students may continue to practice together after/between classes.

    The ancient Indian practice of Hatha can help you release tension, stretch and strengthen your body, relax your mind and lift your spirits. Level 1 is for students who are new to yoga or who want a gentle class. Level 2 is designed for continuing students and those who want a more challenging class.     Much of the vitality of life in Carrboro is due to the active involvement of citizens in the community. Volunteers of all ages regularly share their talents, skills, and ideas by planning or assisting with large events, serving on town advisory boards, or coaching a youth sports team. While some activities require the contribution of many hours others call for only a few hours of time. Not only can you share your talents, you can have fun, make new friends and discover more about your town.
