  2. Workshop Series: Art Therapy and Newcomers Workshop & Walk-Through

    May 9, 2019, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM @ Art Therapy Institute

This event is part of a monthly continuing education series run by the Art Therapy Institute. Please join us on Thursday, May 9th, for a workshop exploring how expressive therapies (ET) are used within counseling with refugee and immigrant populations. This workshop is in conjunction with the Newcomers Art Show, opening on May 10th, which highlights the artwork and stories of over 200 refugees and immigrants living in the Triangle. In this presentation, ATI staff will share a PowerPoint on the impact and uses of ET with newcomers in both school and community-based settings. Next, presenters will walk workshop attendees through the ATI art gallery, explaining specific ET directives displayed on the walls, and why these interventions were implemented. Finally, workshop attendees will have a chance to contribute to a collaborative art piece, to experience ET themselves.

  3. Sounds of the Sonic South

    May 9, 2019, 7:00 PM - 8:15 PM

Join us for an evening of audio stories, including the finalists for this years Sonic South competition: short audio documentaries of healthcare, medicine, and illness in the American South. The Southern Oral History Program (SOHP) invites producers to use archival interviews to create new and thought-provoking short-form audio documentaries, sound art, sonic experiments, and aural landscapes. Producers are encouraged to think creatively about format, structure, and style. For the 2019 Sonic South audio competition, In Sickness & In Health, producers chose from interviews with Southerners about health, illness, and medical care in their own lives, in their families and in their communities. This live listening event will contribute to a shared understanding of our past, and how that past connects with our present and informs our future.
