Transit Agencies Propose Changes To Service - Public Comment Sought

Three of the Triangle’s transit providers are proposing route changes to improve service for riders in the one of the region’s busiest travel corridors. The US 15-501 corridor is an important connection between Chapel Hill and Durham and between UNC and Duke University.  Each day there are thousands of commuting trips to the universities and hospitals, and thousands of trips accessing the commercial centers along the corridor.

If approved, the changes would:

  • Enhance transportation options and reduce traffic congestion
  • Create seamless transfers for all agencies in the 15-501 corridor and reduce service duplication
  • Establish a transfer point between Chapel Hill Transit and DATA
  • Provide all-day, low-cost, local access to the commercial centers
  • Provide direct, fast, consistent connections to the downtowns, the universities, and park-and-ride locations

The changes planned by all three transit agencies along and in the 15-501 corridor:

  • Chapel Hill Transit routes affected would include extending D and DM routes to New Hope Commons Shopping Center and routing and schedule modifications to the CL route
  • DATA route affected would be Route 10
  • Triangle Transit routes affected would include the 402/412 and 403/413

Full information about the proposed changes affecting 15-501 service can be found at: http://www.gotriangle.org/15-501.

Chapel Hill Transit, DATA and Triangle Transit will supply information about the proposed route changes on buses and information also will be posted at key stops along the affected routes. Comments may be made on line at: http://www.gotriangle.org/15-501 or by leaving a message at 485-PLAN (7526).

A public meeting to provide further information is scheduled:

  • Triangle Transit Offices: March 25th  from 4pm-6:30pm; 4600 Emperor Blvd, Durham NC 27703, Board Room

Final recommendations and approval of the recommendations will be made by June 30. The service changes would take place in mid-August 2010.

Shared Ride Transit Services

The Town of Carrboro works with Chapel Hill Transit to provide Shared Ride on-demand transit services to areas of Carrboro that do not have fixed-route bus service.

http://www.ci.chapel-hill.nc.us/index.aspx?page=749

Two types of Shared Ride services will be provided in Carrboro: Feeder Service and Evening/Sunday Service.

  • Feeder Service, which is provided at no charge between 6:45 am and 6:15 pm on weekdays, provides trips between designated bus stops in the “feeder” zones and the nearest bus route or to another “feeder” zone.
  • Evening/Sunday Service is provided to areas that do not have regular evening, Saturday, and Sunday bus service and requires that users pay with Chapel Hill Transit bus tickets (tickets can be purchased at Carrboro Town Hall and other locations).

Funding for the enhanced transit services are being provided through federal Congestion Mitigation / Air Quality (CMAQ) funds and a 50 percent local match from the Town of Carrboro.

Greenhouse Gas Survey

Members of the Press and Public,

A survey has been created to assess community priorities and perspectives regarding establishment of approaches for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The survey can be accessed at http://tiny.cc/OrangeGGI.   The survey should take 10-30 minutes to complete. Familiarity with climate protection science and policy and the greenhouse gas emissions inventory recently completed will support completion of the survey, but is not required.

Orange County local governments have committed to take part in ICLEI’s Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) campaign, and have completed Milestone One of the campaign: Creation of a GHG Emissions Inventory and Forecast. (The results of this inventory are available at http://www.co.orange.nc.us/ercd/greenhousegas.asp. ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability is an international association of local governments as well as national and regional local government organizations that have made a commitment to sustainable development.) Steps to be completed include: Milestone Two: Setting a Reduction Target; Milestone Three: Developing a Local Action Plan; Milestone Four: Implementing the Local Action Plan; and Milestone Five: Measuring Progress and Reporting Results.
