COMMUNITY BOOK FORUM |
|
Co-sponsored with the Carrboro
Cybrary
Small is Possible: Life in a Local Economy
by Lyle Estill
The Community Book Forum series brings our community
together to discuss important issues and ideas. We encourage
the community to read a book and consider its relevance
to and implications for our community and our society
at large. We want to hear your thoughts and ideas at
our forum event where discussion of the book will be
led by expert panelists.
This summer, we will discuss what it takes to live
life in a local economy. Lyle Estill, co-founder of
Piedmont Biofuels, will discuss the local economy in
Chatham County that has allowed their citizens to feed
themselves, fuel themselves, heal themselves, and govern
themselves. This discussion will be valuable to anyone
interested in sustainability, co-ops, biodiesel, whole
foods, slow food, small business, and more.
Copies of the book can be borrowed from the Cybrary.
For more information, call the Cybrary at 918-7387

| SINGING
IN THE RAIN (1952) |
|
One of the most-loved and celebrated film musicals
of all time! The joyous film, co-directed by Stanley
Donen and acrobatic dancer-star-choreographer Gene Kelly,
is a charming, up-beat, graceful and thoroughly enjoyable
experience with great songs, lots of flashbacks, wonderful
dances (including the spectacular Broadway Melody Ballet
with leggy guest star Cyd Charisse), casting and story.
This was another extraordinary example of the organic,
'integrated musical' in which the story's characters
naturally express their emotions in the midst of their
lives. Song and dance replace the dialogue, usually
during moments of high spirits or passionate romance.
And over half of the film - a 'let's put on a play'
type of film, is composed of musical numbers.

"TAMBOR VIVO" with Beverly
Botsford |
|
"Tambor Vivo" is an ensemble of professional
and community based percussionists who study and play
various forms of Afro-Cuban folkloric music. The Spanish
word tambor means drum and vivo, loosely translated,
means alive and living with a strong deep feeling. The
ensemble blends Cuban music traditions with Carolina
spice while honoring the healing energy and life force
of the drums and spirits.
"Tambor Vivo" presents traditions and inspirations
from the amazingly rich and complex body of music in
the Afro-Cuban drumming tradition. Polytonal percussive
orchestrations provide the foundation for improvisation
and expression, blending drum, song, movement, and music.
Using congas ( tumbadoras ), shekeres (guiro), cajon
(box drum), bata, bombo (bass drum), clave, cascara,
campana, and a variety of other instruments, the group
embraces rhythms from sacred and secular Afro-Cuban
traditions, including; Guiro, Bata, Bembe, Ijessa, Rumba
Guaguanco, Yambu, Mozambique and Conga/Comparsa.
Musicians: Beverly Botsford (musical director), Justin
Hill, Robert Cantrell, Patrick Loebs, and Jim Roberts

GET INVOLVED
Much of the vitality of life in Carrboro is due to the
active involvement of citizens in the community. Volunteers
of all ages regularly
share their talents, skills, and ideas by planning or
assisting with large events, serving on town advisory
boards, or coaching a youth sports team. While some
activities require the contribution of many hours others
call for only a few hours of time. Not only can you
share your talents, you can have fun, make new friends
and discover more about your town.
